On Tuesday, Mt. Pleasant Mayor stressed that relief from traffic congestion in the town of Mt. Pleasant is on its way. $100 million in road improvements in the town have started, which includes an 83 million dollar project to widen Johnnie Dodds Blvd from just north of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge to the I-526 interchange. The three mile project will make Johnnie Dodds a 6 lane highway. The project is scheduled for completion by November of 2012. The towns population is expected to increase to 90,000 residents in 20 years from the current 60,000. Other transportation projects include the widening of Bowman Road, the construction of the I-526/U.S. Highway 17 interchange and the widening of U.S. 17 to six lanes from the Isle of Palms connector to Darrell Creek Trail. Other noteworthy town project is the Shem Creek waterfront Park expected to be completed by next summer and a new 246 acre recreation complex on Rifle Range Road. Mayor Swails stated "I am proud to report to you that the State of the Town is strong, and growing stronger by the day."
