Park was dedicated today by the Mayor of Mt. Pleasant, Billy Swails.

The town of Mt. Pleasant was one of the three grand winners of South Carolina's safest communities awards by the Foundation for Traffic Safety of AAA Carolinas

The awards are based on crash statistics, law enforcement officers per capita, traffic safety programs and whether communities have traffic safety divisions. The city of Hanahan and Cameron were te other two winners in the state.

Charleston just replaced San Francisco as the # 1 tourist destination in the United States according to Conde Nast Magazine readers. This honor had been held by San Francisco for the past 18 years.

According to an article in The Post and Courier Newspaper, "The Charleston, North Charleston and Summerville metropolitan area had the greatest percentage-point increase in the nation over the past decade in the portion of residents who hold bachelor's degrees. Experts attribute the increase largely to more educated people moving here from other states." "The percentage of people in the area who hold a bachelor's degree grew by 6.9 percentage points to 31.9 percent between 2000 and 2010."

The Wando High School Boys Win The

20011 Class AAAA State Swimming Championship

Led by Zach Lierley, the Wando High School Boys Swimming Team won the Class AAAA 2011 South Carolina State Swimming Championship.  The Wando boys swimming team had been seeded second behind Riverside High School. Wando finished 5 points in front of Riverside with 378 points. Zach Lierley won the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.93) and the 100 breaststroke (59.11)

The new Shem Creek waterfront park was scheduled to open the end of August

but the construction project appears to be behind schedule.

The above photos was taken on September 2, 2011 at the the intersection of Highway 17 North and Bowman Road in Mt. Pleasant. The large mountain of dirt appears to be in preparation of the construction of the overpass.

East Cooper Medical Center & Kindred Complete Sale Of The Old East Cooper Hospital In Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina

The Old East Cooper Hospital Facility Site has been sold to Kindred Healthcare.The existing Kindred Hospital Charleston will relocate it's operations to the 125,000 square foot facility in the near future. Kindred Hospital Charleston will renovate the East Cooper facility to house 59 long term acute care beds and 35 sub acute care beds by 2012. East Cooper Medical Center left the old facility in 2010, when it opened it's new five-floor 250,000 square foot hospital at 2000 Hospital Drive.

Johnnie Dodds Blvd. Construction Update July 22, 2011

It appears that the construction project to widen Highway 17 in Mt. Pleasant SC. continues at a steady pace. Part of the roadway project entails the construction of an overpass at the intersection of Highway 17 and Bowman Road. As you can see, the construction of the overpass has started. This overpass in addition to the two additional traffic lanes should substantially improve traffic flow at this bottleneck.

Trader Joe's In Mt. Pleasant SC To Open July 29, 2011

The new Trader Joe's Grocery is scheduled to open at 8:00am on July 29, 2011. There will be a ceremonial lei-cutting. The Mt. Pleasant Trader Joe's is the second Trader Joe's store in South Carolina with other being in Greenville, SC. The opening celebration will include food demonstrations and stickers for children. The store hours will be from 8:00am and 9:00pm. The new store manager is Chris Spina who comes from the Trader Joe's store in Atlanta. The assistant is Brian Travers from the the company store in New York City's Time Square.

Trader Joe's Mount Pleasant, SC Construction Update

The construction of the new Trader Joe's grocery store in Mt. Pleasant, SC appears to be on schedule. The photos below were taken on June 28, 2011. They show that the new Trader Joes's Grocery store building is now identified with store signs. Landscaping is currently being installed & I would assme that the interior of Trader Joe's is proceeding as scheduled with an opening scheduled for mid to late summer 2011.

The 2011 Demographic Report For The Town Of Mount Pleasant, SC 

The 2011 Demographic Report for the town of Mt. Pleasant, SC was just released setting forth interesting statistics for the town as of 2010 and compared to the year 2000. At the end of 2010 the population of Mt. Pleasant was given as 67,843 as compared with 47,609 in the year 2000.

The medium household income in the town in 2009 was given as $74,128 and medium family income as $92,930 in that year. 61.8% of the population 25 years or older held a bachelor's degree or higher and 21.1% held a graduate or professional degree. 96.9% held at least a high school degree.

Gregorie Ferry Landing Photo & Construction Update

The above photo of the entrance to Gregorie Ferry Landing off of highway 41 in the town of Mt. Pleasant, SC was taken on June 12, 2011. The infrastructure of this new commercial/residential, residential and mixed use development appears to be well underway. The initial phase will be anchored by a 240 unit class A multi-family apartment community on a 10 acre tract.
